Summary
With the liberation of their home world from their longstanding Klingon/Cardassian oppressors, the Terrans found themselves a free people for the first time in 85 years. With the advent of their newfound sovereignty, there ensued some discussion as to what form of government they should establish in the absence of their subjugators. A democracy was briefly on the cards, but after the failed reforms of Emperor Spock had ultimately cost them their freedom, there was many a Terran who doubted the effectiveness of peace, especially in the likelihood that the Klingons and Cardassians were too proud to acknowledge the Terrans as an independent entity. And so, it was decided, for the continued independence of the Terran peoples, and Empire would be re-established, this time with a new goal of growing and strengthening their former domain. To prevent mistakes made by Emperors prior, governance over this newfound Empire would be jointly presided over by an Emperor, and a publicly-appointed council, both of whom would—at least in theory—represent the needs and interests of the greater Terran peoples.
One of the first decrees of this new empire would be the strengthening of their military forces; In the immediate aftermath of Terra’s liberation, the Empire relied almost entirely on old warships that were nearing, if not already, a hundred years old, and were far from competitive in contrast to their much newer Klingon and Cardassian contemporaries. With a century of technological advancements to catch up to, the Empire would need to develop a warship that could even the playing field, and do so in a short turnaround time. To that end, the Empire turned towards its counterpart from a parallel universe, the United Federation of Planets. While the Terran Rebellion had previously “interpolated” plans for a Federation warship, they found this “Defiant” Class of ships had too short a lifespan with which to be suitable for their needs. Another set of plans would need to be acquired, and word of mouth was that the Federation was building such a vessel to combat an army of purple-skinned lizard men; one with a substantially longer lifespan, a higher warp factor, an armament that (depending on who you asked) was comparable or even superior to the Defiant’s, and—most interestingly—the capability to split into three separate, warp-capable combat vessels. If the rumors were to be taken at face value, this ship could give the Empire a leading edge over the Alliance, though there remained the question of how well the Federation would guard such a vessel.
Using methods for crossing over into the mirror universe that had been discovered by the Terran Rebellion, a strike force was organized to travel into the mirror universe and- posing as their respective counterparts- make off with a set of schematics for the ship. This was not without careful planning, and in fact required several years of reconnaissance before such an operation could even be attempted in 2376. It was during this time, however, that the Terrans gained additional insight into this new class of warship—dubbed the “Prometheus”-Class and categorized as an “Advanced Escort.” Several revolutionary technologies that the Terrans were not previously aware of also came to light, including a holographic doctor who could perform physical duties up to and including surgical procedures with the precision of a computer, and a unique form of circuitry that utilized a biological cell to organize information faster and more efficiently than the Terrans’ traditional Isolinear fare. However, the Federation had been gradually perfecting this technology for nearly a decade, and with a decree from the Emperor that they needed these warships to be ready by 2380, the Terrans simply lacked the time to polish it to the degree the Federation had, and would have to develop more primitive versions of these systems through trial and error.
Following the successful recovery of schematics for the Prometheus-Class Advanced Escort, the Terran High Council officially authorized the construction of their new warship, under the codename of “Eternal Winter.” This, of course, was an allusion to the final name chosen for the Class: “Hestia,” after the ancient Greek Goddess of Eternal Winter- a killer of the old, and a herald for the new.
Construction of the first prototype, NCC-97980, began construction in Yard 3 of the recently-recommissioned Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards, under the direction of the Yard’s supervisor, Lieutenant Kirche Zerbst. Despite some setbacks to address both structural and security concerns, the prototype was completed in mid-2377 and began testing later that year.
The new warship was received favorably by test crews, who up that point were more accustomed to operating slow, outdated warships and technology that didn’t always work due to its age. Comparatively, the new vessel was fast, responsive, and highly adaptable thanks to the advent of its ability to split into three smaller vessels- it was, as one Captain put it, “a one-ship armada.” Following completion of testing, the prototype was presented to the High Council for inspection and a final sign-off, of which they granted. With their contract now formally secured for the construction of further vessels, NCC-97980 was pressed into service as the Imperial Star Ship Hestia- the Empire’s first brand new warship since its formation and a game-changer in the galactic landscape.
